         At your consultation appointment we'll take a detailed medical history and test a few things before we begin the hands-on part of the session (we aim to start your treatment at the first session although there are a small number of cases where this might not be possible due to medical conditions).

           At your first follow up we explain to you our findings, our proposed plan of care and answer any questions that you may have. In our experience those who carry out such self care are those who make the quickest recovery and are less likely to have the problem reoccur.

          I’m Andy and grew up in the small village of Upchurch on the north Kent coast. I got a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology from Kingston University, London and went on to work on a number of pretty cool projects for a number of well-known telecoms and software companies in Europe and the UK before retraining as a chiropractor in 2013. I got my Masters Degree in Chiropractic from McTimoney College in Abingdon, Oxfordshire and qualified in 2017.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           The first part of my chiropractic career was spent working in the community spinal care team with Basingstoke NHS alongside a large practice of GPs. That really opened my eyes to the kind of healthcare work I wanted to do in our own clinical practice in Milton Park and a lot has changed since we first opened our doors in the Innovation Centre in January 2018.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           I’ve always had a keen interest in exercise and the body’s ability to handle and adapt to changing physical stresses. One of the areas that I always look at with patients is how you are using your body, which came from studying Alexander Technique. That’s really how I got started in the healthcare profession; I had been working in London for a tech company and commuting by car everyday from Hampshire. Within six months, I couldn’t walk with my entire left leg and left lower back seizing up which is how I found a local Alexander Technique teacher. That led me onto chiropractic and sports massage and a bunch of other things and the rest is sort of history. I say “sort of” as I’m still adding new skills and disciplines like yoga... I just can't stop now that I’ve found my passion in life.
          &#xD;

  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           I now combine a wealth of experience in other allied healthcare disciplines into how I work with my patients today. I love to see the changes our patients make and the benefits they secure for themselves.

           I work with a range of patients, my youngest is now 9 and my oldest 90 and still going strong. I particularly like working with older patients and sports people of any age or anyone interested in their fitness. I find these people tend to be highly committed to looking after themselves and not just asking for “quick fix”.

           What’s coming in 2021? I’m bringing targeted mobility / flexibility stretching to the clinic with Gravity Yoga®. I have a massive interest in personal development and I am launching a business to teach these alongside the clinical practice.

  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           One silly fact about me? In 1999, I qualified as a freefall skydiver in California. Jumping out of the plane was just a surreal experience. I’ve not been able to do it since though as the fear factor of waiting for the plane ride up was just too much and used to bring me out in a cold sweat! I probably should have done something about that, but hindsight really is a wonderful thing. I’m also not sure I’d recommend the physiological effects of deceleration when the canopy (parachute) opens even though it really is exhilarating!
          &#xD;

         As garden season approaches - Here are our tips to avoid Back Pain this Spring

         Winter will soon be behind us and our thoughts are turning to the new growing season ahead. For those of us who love the hands-on of growing our own, we know all too well that overenthusiasm in the preparation of the ground can have frustrating consequences when we find ourselves in pain or immobile because we sprained or strained something!
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
           
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Gardening can involve a great deal of hard physical exercise, yet a pre-workout stretch often gets overlooked as we launch straight into the digging and planting (I am as guilty of this as anyone and bitterly regret it the next day!). 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
           
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          There are, however, a few simple steps we can take to get those muscles warmed up and stretched out so we don’t risk an injury or stiffness the next day.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
           
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Start with simple shoulder rolls to warm up the shoulder joints and gently swing your arms forwards, backwards and round in circles until the creaking and cracking stops and you feel the joints start to feel warm and relaxed.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
           
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Next take your head gently from side to side then tuck your chin to your chest – hold for a few seconds in each position and only stretch as far as is comfortable, we don’t want any overstretch injuries before we even start the gardening!  Avoid rolling your head backwards in a circle as this can put awkward grinding pressure on the neck which can cause pain or discomfort.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           A gentle way to warm the back, hips and knees is to do gentle hip and knee rolls – first stand with your feet shoulder width apart and slowly circle your hips one way then the other. Then keep your legs and feet together whilst gently circling your knees.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Finally bend forward gently to stretch out the back of your legs and slowly roll back up so your shoulders straighten last.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Of course there’s an even better way to reduce the risk of injury and that’s keeping your body in optimal condition through chiropractic, soft tissue release and core work! We strongly advocate this preventative approach and work with you to ensure that your body is functioning well and better able to adapt to the demands placed upon it. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Further to the Government announcement regarding the lockdown, we continue to be EXEMPT FROM CLOSURE and as such will remain open to see patients for whom there is a medical need for care and patients are permitted to travel for medical appointments.

             For new patients, we will conduct the initial consultation by telephone or video call to gather as much information as we can. This will enable us to focus the face to face time in clinic on physical assessment and care.

             Your Practitioner will be wearing disposable PPE in accordance with the guidance from our Association which is changed for each patient.              We are spacing appointments so that there is minimal close proximity with other people and the clinic is being thoroughly cleaned between patients with the bench and all contact points cleaned with antiviral and antibacterial cleaner. We always use fresh couch roll for every patient so you can be assured that there is a barrier on the surface as well as it being cleaned.

             The building we are based in operates a one-way system to minimise close proximity movement and we will accompany you to the exit.

            ‘Back pain’ is a very general term that can be used to describe a diverse range of symptoms that fall into the sub-categories of lower back pain, mid back pain, neck and/or shoulder pain, sciatica, chronic, acute…. 
           &#xD;
      &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           There can be soft tissue damage, disc movement or herniation, misaligned vertebrae, other illness or disease… all of this needs to be investigated and addressed accordingly. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           There are many possible reasons why you have this pain and in this blog we address pain of musculoskeletal origin and how we may help. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Often trying to pinpoint the actual pain site can prove difficult and frustrating for the sufferer, especially when there are referrals to the limbs, the opposite side of the body or the pain only hits when carrying out a very specific movement that is hard to identify and recreate. The pain can hit in an instant and trying to work out what the trigger was may be difficult.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          For a patient seeking care for ‘back pain’ it can be very confusing if they are unable to locate where they are feeling the pain.  You know it hurts but can’t at that moment put your finger on it.  You just want some relief from the pain.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          There is also a fear about the level of pain you might be feeling.  It can therefore be a surprise to discover that higher level pain does not necessarily equate to a more serious problem.  For example, a simple muscle strain (tear) can be extremely painful as the soft tissues surrounding the injury site become highly inflamed and start to affect neighbouring structures. The adjoining muscles become fatigued from the protective spasm they adopt to protect the injury site and the resulting tight muscles can start to compress other soft tissues and nerves.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          What might be a relatively small muscle tear then becomes a bigger problem resulting in high levels of pain, immobility, inability to find comfortable positions to sit and sleep and all the associated problems that brings.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Compare this to a herniated (‘slipped’) disc that has the potential to be more serious but may cause no pain at all and go unnoticed for a long period of time.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Acute Pain
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This is generally considered a short-term pain that can last from a few seconds to hours over a period of weeks.  These are typically injuries such as muscle strains, misaligned vertebrae in the spine and postural muscle tightness. The pain comes on suddenly and is typically of a ‘hot, sharp, stabbing’ nature. If left untreated, acute pain can become chronic.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Chronic Pain
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This is pain that persists for more than three months and may result from acute injury or have a gradual onset that gets progressively worse over time.  Chronic pain may come and go and the level of pain may vary each time, from a low level ache to periods of intense acute pain.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This type of pain is common in low back issues where it is typically dull, more diffuse and often described as an ache rather than a pain.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Referred Pain
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Pain can sometimes be ‘referred’ pain – that is where the pain is felt away from the injury site. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          For example, the muscles in the left side of your lower back have tensed up, not because of injury to that area but because of poor posture or repeating an activity that is one-sided. You might not feel any pain in your left side, but because things are now overtight you will start to get a body imbalance, typically a lean to the tight side or that hip becomes elevated.  This means the muscles on the right side will have to work harder to correct the imbalance, resulting in fatigue and possible overcompensation injury.  You will then feel the pain in the right side although the root of the problem is actually on the left. By releasing the tight muscles on the left, rebalancing the pelvis as necessary and calming the newly tensed muscle on the right, we can regain a state of alignment and body balance that reduces the pain and allows the healing process to take place.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          It is extremely important therefore that we assess and work on both sides of the body, not just in the area where you are feeling the pain.           We use a multi-layered approach to release tight muscles and realign the spinal vertebrae using gentle adjusting techniques. We are not forcing anything, nor ‘fixing’ the problem, rather we help the body reach a more comfortable state to reduce physical stress and help it find its natural state of balance. When the body is in better balance it can start to let go of the holding patterns that might be causing the pain and allow the healing process to begin.

           In this post, we'll be looking at lower back pain - Some of the key areas that it manifests and what is going on in these areas.
          &#xD;

           First we’ll look at the sacrum – the large flat bone right at the base of your back – and then move up to the lumbar vertebrae, the five large flexible bones at the bottom of the spine.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           What is the sacrum?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This consists of five bones that are fused together to form a flat, triangular shape.  This is a very important part of the spine as it is a connecting point for the pelvis bones on either side, the base of the spinal column at the top and the coccyx below.  There is little movement within the sacrum itself but each of the joints to the other bones are under a huge amount of stress as they form part of the pelvic girdle upon which our whole upper body is supported.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Why do I feel pain here?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The sacrum is an attachment point for many of the deep muscles in the buttocks, particularly the gluteus group, the piriformis, the core stabiliser muscles of the lower back and the hamstrings of the back of the leg.  As you can imagine, if any of these muscles tighten and shorten there will be an effect on the sacrum, often a tilting or rotating pattern that then puts the lumbar area under strain.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Pain around the sacrum may be a hot, sharp pain or it may feel more a dull ache.  If the pain has been caused by muscular tightness – poor posture or a sedentary lifestyle can be contributors to this – then a few sessions of physical therapy may be all that is needed to encourage the release of the tight holding pattern they may have got stuck in.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Sacral pain may also be due to damage to the ligaments that hold the structures in place and keep the attachment points strong.  The ligaments that connect the sacum to the illium of the pelvis – the sacroilliac joint – can be susceptible to the usual soft tissue injuries of strains, sprains and inflammation leading to restriction in the movement of the joint.  Sacroilliac joint dysfunction commonly presents as pain across the very lower back, the buttocks and sometimes radiating down towards the knees.  It may also refer across the hips or as groin pain in the front of the pelvis.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Stress to the sacroiliac joints may be the result of a trauma such as falling and landing hard on one buttock, jarring from a trip or overextending (as in kicking something), or it may occur over time due to a leg imbalance or repeated, long term, poor posture.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
        
            What is the lumbar spine?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This section of the spine, that sits just above the sacrum, has to be strong enough to support the weight of the body above as well as being flexible to act as a shock absorber during movement, so these five lumbar vertebrae are larger than the rest of the bones that make up the spine.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Why do I feel pain here?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Due to the extreme stresses this section of the spine is exposed to, it is a common area for back pain to occur.  Muscularly, the quadratus lumborum and erector spinae take a lot of the strain and these often become extremely tight, or hypertonic. Muscle spasm frequently occurs as a protective reflex and the back ‘locks’ up.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           There are also shallow facet joints in between each vertebra which can become compressed or overstretched, both of which can cause symptoms of pain and discomfort. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Prolapsed (‘slipped’) discs occur when the disc, which acts as a cushion between the vertebrae, gets squeezed out of place. Herniated discs are similar, but the strong outer casing of the disc tears and the soft tissue bulges out.  Both can cause severe symptoms – including pain that spreads to the buttocks and legs, tingling or numbness, muscle spasms or weakness – but equally both can present no pain symptoms at all. It all depends upon whether there is contact with the nerve roots or spinal cord.
          &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           The health problems of working at a desk all day are a hot topic at the moment, with more of us than ever working from home in less than ideal setups.

          At best this will be at a super duper ergonomic desk with sit and stand capability, a highly adjustable chair that fits our body perfectly and the tech available that means we have everything we need to be comfortable at our fingertips.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Sadly that isn’t the reality for many with the sudden closures of businesses and enforced working from home without access to the equipment we may normally have in the office – we hear many patients reporting that they’ve been working at a dining table for the last few months or using a laptop on the sofa.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          It’s no surprise therefore that we have been seeing more patients with back and neck pain since we’ve returned to work and most of these have reported it starting shortly after they began working from home.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Back pain is one of the leading causes for workplace absence with 2.8 million working days lost in the UK during 2018/19 from work related back disorders. Factor in mobile technology and hand held devices that are never far from our reach and extend our working practices far beyond the typical 8 hour day and add social tech time on top of that and it’s pretty clear to see that our bodies are operating at a level of strain that we have never before experienced.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          As human beings we’re not designed to be still all day, yet our lifestyles and working habits can have us sitting for many hours at a time. Long hours at work, the daily commute (for those that are still travelling to work) and evenings in front of the television, mobile devices or video games have resulted in a nation at risk from long term back problems as well as a host of other health issues.  You only have to Google the term 'office workers health issues' to be faced with pages of sites that report statistics on back pain, neck pain, repetitive strain injury and a host of other health issues related to the physical and mental stress of working environments. Now factor in trying to work from a home setup, make-do workstations and perhaps young children constantly interrupting or other demands on your attention…. we are at risk of chronic pain issues like never before.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           So what’s the solution?

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Well, in it’s most simplistic form it would be to spend less time sitting and more time on the move, but oftentimes that’s easier said than done.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Here are 3 simple things you can do today to reduce the stress being placed on your body:
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        
            Take regular short breaks from desk work and have a walk around – to the bathroom, to get a drink of water, to a colleague instead of emailing them if you’re in the office. At home, take a stroll into the garden or round the block at lunchtime. Use stairs instead of the lifts where possible.  Think of what you can do in your current environment to increase your activity, whether that’s using the upstairs bathroom instead of the more convenient downstairs loo, walking a lap of the garden or downstairs every time you go to get a drink of water or doing 5 stretches each time you complete at task.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        
            If you are involved in long video meetings then how about encouraging your team to spend a minute or two halfway through the meeting to all stand up, have a stretch and change position – it doesn’t need to take long but will give your body a break and help you feel better.

    &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        
            Vary your working day as much as possible so you avoid spending too long in any one position. Stand up when you are on the phone, have standing or walking meetings, take a walk at lunchtime.

    &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

          Back and neck pain are the most common things we associate with a sedentary lifestyle but there are lesser known consequences such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers and poor mental health. There are so many reasons why moving more is beneficial to overall health and we hope you’ve found some inspiration here to take some of the steps necessary to prevent longer term health issues.
